Juvederm Q & A

What is Juvéderm?

As the body ages, the hyaluronic acid it naturally produces diminishes from the skin causing it to lose volume and structure. Juvéderm is an injectable filler using hyaluronic acid to enhance the volume of the skin to produce a younger, smoother appearance. Hyaluronic acid is a complex sugar that can maintain a three-dimensional shape while in the body by holding onto water molecules.

Once injected into the skin folds, the hyaluronic acid keeps the skin hydrated, replaces the structure and volume of the skin, and maintains the shape around the eye. Dr. Leahy offers Juvéderm at Leahy Family Care & Wellness Center for beautiful results patients will love.

What will I experience from Juvéderm injections?

The Juvéderm procedure starts with a numbing cream placed on the treatment area. The cream stays on for about 10 minutes to allow it to activate. When the area is sufficiently numb, an aesthetic specialist will use a small needle and a series of injections to administer the Juvéderm, after which point she’ll massage the area of injection to ensure proper distribution of the Juvéderm. Intermittent icing of the treated area will need to be done for the remainder of the day, but the entire procedure takes less than 20 minutes after numbing.

How is Juvéderm different from other facial fillers?

There are various types of dermal fillers available for use. Juvéderm is most often compared to Restylane as they have similar properties. Both fillers are FDA-approved and contain hyaluronic acid as their main active ingredient. However, Juvéderm will settle into the skin smoother than Restylane, making it less likely to bump up under the tissue. The area where the Juvéderm was injected will return to its natural state after the injection with no loose skin, development of extra lines, or stretching. A Juvéderm treatment uses a full syringe, which makes the injection easier for doctors to perform.
